This is a white paper that summarizes the cognitive mapping literature and comments on theory and practice that is current in the field. The discussion moves from definitions of and perspectives on the term cognitive map, to selected theoretical foundations of its different forms and finishes by discussing functions and applications typically found in research reports. The literatures I draw on include organization theory, organization behaviour, cognitive psychology and, to lesser extents, political science, systems dynamics and informatics.
