The three men followed Florinda Maestas and her child into the
room that served as kitchen, dining room, parlor, and sleeping
quarters for the child. There was no furniture, but Florinda unrolled a
buffalo hide on the floor and motioned to them to sit down. She
placed a large pot of water in the coals of her corner fireplace and
put a generous scoop of ground coffee into it. Then she went outside
to check the horno.
“Interesting woman,” McGuire said.
“Stay away from that,” Vick said. “By my lights, she is the best
cook in town. But Doña Florinda is also Lieutenant Zambrano’s
mistress. Most people think that that child is his.”
“I thought ‘doña’ meant a married woman.”
“It does in the dictionary, Matt, but out here it is a way to show
respect. If there is something you admire in a woman, even if she is
not married, you can call her ‘doña.’ On my second trip to Santa Fe,
Zambrano suggested that I might want to take my meals with her.
When I discovered the connection, and sampled her food, it was an
easy decision.”
After the three ate hot bread and fresh goat cheese, they walked
to the palace.
