Susanne K. Langer's book "Feeling and Form: A Theory of Art" (1953) offers a comprehensive theory of art that analyzes painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, music, dance, drama and film. Langer argues that artists use various elements like colors, shapes, sounds, and rhythms to formulate feeling in their work, with each artwork being an art symbol that expresses forms of feeling.

The book builds on Langer's earlier work "Philosophy in a New Key" (1942), where she developed a theory of symbolism that she felt could be applied to all the arts. In "Feeling and Form", Langer contends that feeling is a fundamental aspect of human consciousness that serves as the foundation for thought, perception, and expression.

Langer suggests that the purpose of art is to render pre-reflexive experience available to consciousness so that it can be reflected upon. She believes that in life, the forms of feeling are too embedded in practical situations for us to contemplate them, but when art is viewed as art, the experience becomes disinterested and the forms are isolated from practical situations
