本書是作者對自身文化「硬心腸的」反省的結果。對來自一個「心」發達於「腦」的文化背景的人來說，這個態度是幾經克服以後始能達到的。「腦」對中國人來說也是「心」，但是卻被感情的「心」所掩蓋。因此，這裡所謂的「硬心腸」態度，其實只是將思考判斷的功能從腦部中層上移到大腦皮層左半部而已。
